04 Aug Alpha Sender ID vs Virtual Number: Which Should Your Small Business Use?
It’s the question we get asked more than any other, and since the ACMA’s new Sender ID rules kicked in, it’s more important than ever to get right.
When you send an SMS from touchSMS, the “from” name your customer sees is called your Sender ID. In Australia, you’ve essentially got two choices: send from a branded name (an Alpha Sender ID) or send from a number (a Virtual Number or our free Shared Number pool).
Here’s the catch that trips up a lot of small businesses: these are two entirely separate sending methods, and they’re mutually exclusive on any given message. You can’t have your business name displayed and have customers reply to a number. It’s one or the other, every time you hit send.
So which one is right for you? Let’s break it down.
Option 1: Alpha Sender ID – your name in lights
An Alpha Sender ID replaces the phone number with your business name – up to 11 characters, no spaces or symbols. When “SarahsSalon” pops up on a customer’s phone, there’s zero doubt who the message is from.
The upside:
- Instant brand recognition – no thoughts of “who’s this?”
- Great for one-way alerts, reminders and notifications
- Looks professional and polished
The trade-offs:
- Recipients cannot reply. Ever. If your message is marketing, you’ll need to include another opt-out method, like an opt-out link
- It must now be registered with the ACMA. Since 1 July 2026, any unregistered Alpha Sender ID is over-stamped as “Unverified” on delivery, which looks worse than no branding at all
If a branded name suits your business, registration is straightforward – our ACMA Sender ID Register guide walks you through it.
Option 2: Virtual Number – your own two-way line
A Virtual Number is a dedicated Australian mobile number exclusive to your account. Every message you send comes from the same number, and – here’s the magic – your customers can text you back.
The upside:
- Two-way conversation. Replies, confirmations, “YES” to appointments, feedback, questions – it all comes straight back to your touchSMS inbox and email
- Simple opt-outs – customers just reply STOP and it’s handled automatically
- Run Text-In campaigns with keywords and auto-responders
- Consistency – all your messages thread together under the one number, and customers can save it to their contacts (where your business name shows anyway!)
- Completely outside the ACMA register. Numbers don’t need registration, and never will under the current rules – the legislation applies to alphanumeric Sender IDs only
The trade-offs:
- A small monthly cost (month-to-month, no lock-in)
- Until a customer saves your number, they see digits rather than your name
The mistake to avoid
During the ACMA rollout, plenty of businesses registered an Alpha Sender ID believing it would make their business name appear on messages sent from their Virtual Number. It doesn’t work that way. Registering an Alpha ID only lets you send from that name – as a separate, one-way sending method. Your Virtual Number messages will always display the number.
If you want both brand recognition and replies, the practical play is: use your Virtual Number and encourage customers to save it. Their phone does the branding for you, and the conversation stays open.
Our quick rule of thumb
| Your priority | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Appointment reminders where you need a “YES/NO” reply | Virtual Number |
| Marketing campaigns you want opt-outs handled automatically for | Virtual Number |
| Text-in competitions, keywords and auto-replies | Virtual Number |
| One-way alerts or notifications where brand recognition is everything | Alpha Sender ID (registered!) |
| Just starting out, low volume, watching every dollar | Free Shared Number pool |
Many touchSMS customers actually use both from the same account – an Alpha Sender ID for branded alerts, and a Virtual Number for anything conversational. Just remember: it’s a choice you make per message, not a combination.
Ready to claim your own number? You can purchase a Virtual Number directly from your touchSMS account and be sending (and receiving!) within minutes. Or if a branded Sender ID is more your style, make sure it’s registered – log in and head to SETTINGS > SENDER IDs, to get started .
