The 1 July deadline has come and gone, and if the questions hitting our support inbox are anything to go by, there's still plenty of confusion about what the new rules actually mean. Let's set the record straight.
The ACMA's SMS Sender ID Register officially came into full effect on 1 July 2026. It's a big win for consumers - scammers can no longer impersonate trusted brands like "AusPost" or "myGov" in your message thread, and it's part of the Australian Government's broader Fighting Scams initiative.
But in the months leading up to the deadline, we fielded hundreds of questions from customers, and we noticed the same misunderstandings coming up again and again. If you've been scratching your head over any of these, you're definitely not alone.
Myth #1: "Every business has to register a Sender ID"
Not true. The register only applies to Alpha Sender IDs - the branded business name (like "touchSMS" or "JoesPizza") that appears at the top of a text message in place of a phone number.
If you send SMS from a Virtual Number or our free Shared Number pool, the new rules don't apply to you at all. You don't need to register anything, and nothing about your sending changes.
Many customers assumed the deadline meant they had to go out and get an Alpha Sender ID registered, even though they'd never used one. If sending from a number has been working for your business, there's no obligation to change a thing. In fact, numbers have one big advantage Alpha Sender IDs will never have: your customers can reply.
Myth #2: "If I register an Alpha Sender ID, my business name will show on messages from my Virtual Number"
This was easily the most common misconception we saw, and we understand why. It sounds logical: register your business name, and it appears alongside your number, right?
Unfortunately, that's not how SMS works. Alpha Sender IDs and Virtual Numbers are two completely separate, mutually exclusive ways of sending. Every SMS is sent from either:
- An Alpha Sender ID - your business name shows at the top of the message, but recipients cannot reply; or
- A Virtual Number/ Shared Local Number - the message comes from your dedicated mobile number, recipients can reply, but the number (not your name) is what's displayed.
Registering an Alpha Sender ID with the ACMA doesn't attach your brand name to your Virtual Number – it simply verifies that you're authorised to use that name when you choose to send from it. One message, one Sender ID. You can use both methods from the same touchSMS account for different purposes, but never both on the same message.
The good news? If you invite customers to save your Virtual Number in their contacts, your business name will appear on their phone anyway, with a two-way conversation included.
Myth #3: "I need to register my Virtual Number with the ACMA"
Some customers tried to register their Virtual Number as their Sender ID – and were confused when they couldn't. The ACMA legislation applies to alphanumeric (Alpha) Sender IDs only. Phone numbers - including Virtual Numbers, shared numbers, and standard mobiles are already tightly managed within the telco network and sit entirely outside the register.
There's no form to fill in, no approval to wait for, and no risk of your messages being labelled "Unverified". Virtual Numbers just keep working as they always have.
So what actually changed on 1 July?
From 1 July 2026, any SMS sent to an Australian mobile using an unregistered Alpha Sender ID is over-stamped with the label "Unverified" instead of the business name. That's it - but it matters. An "Unverified" label is a fast way to torch trust with your customers, so if you do send from a branded name, registration is essential.
Here's a simple cheat sheet:
How you sendAffected by the register?Action needed
Alpha Sender ID (business name)

Must be registered or it shows as "Unverified"

Still using an unregistered Alpha Sender ID?
It's not too late - registration is still open, and getting verified means your brand name (rather than a warning label) lands in your customers' hands. As a small business with an ABN, you'll need your Australian Business Register contact details up to date, since that's how the ACMA verifies who's authorised to approve the registration.
Head over to our ACMA Sender ID Register guide for the step-by-step process, or check out Understanding your Sender ID options if you're weighing up which sending method suits your business best.
And if you're still not sure whether the rules apply to you? Log in to touchSMS and check your default Sender ID under Settings. If it's a word, register it. If it's a number, put the kettle on - you're already done.
